Types of stone columns

A column can conventionally be divided into 3 parts:

• capital.

Manufacturing technology of granite columns at a modern granite production facility

Modern granite production in Korostyshiv uses Italian CNC machines and diamond wire saws. Creating one column with a diameter of 400 mm and height of 3.5 m takes 14 to 21 days and includes 12 technological stages.

First, the granite block is sawn into blanks of the required diameter. Then the blank goes to a lathe with a diamond tool, where in 8–10 hours a perfectly round shaft with entasis (thickening at 1/3 of the height) is formed. Next, flutes are milled — vertical grooves 15–25 mm deep that visually lighten the massive structure.

A separate workshop produces capitals. We manufacture over 40 types of capitals: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and custom designs. Each capital is carved from a solid piece of granite, never glued from segments — this is a fundamental principle of our granite production.

Hollow granite columns – a revolution in weight and cost reduction

When a column serves only a decorative function, we offer hollow granite columns. Wall thickness is just 30–40 mm, weight is reduced 4–5 times. Externally, it is impossible to distinguish a hollow column from a solid one.

Technology:

1. Turning the outer surface.
2. Drilling the inner cavity with a diamond core bit 300–500 mm in diameter.
3. Installation of a steel core (if necessary).
4. Polishing the inner surface for perfect light reflection.

Installation of granite columns: 7 rules that will save your project

1. The foundation under the column must be at least 30 cm deeper than the soil freezing level.
2. A 20 mm steel embed plate in the foundation is mandatory.
3. Between the base and the foundation — waterproofing with lead tape.
4. For columns taller than 3 m — mandatory steel reinforcement inside.
5. Joints between segments are filled with two-component epoxy adhesive matched to the stone color.
6. For the first 48 hours after installation, the column must not be loaded.
7. Every 3 years, surface hydrophobization is recommended.

Maintenance of granite columns: 3 procedures for 50 years of service

Korostyshiv granite requires no complicated maintenance. It is sufficient to:

• wash once a year with a 120 bar pressure washer;
• apply hydrophobizer every 5–7 years (reduces water absorption 30 times);
• in case of graffiti — treat with special paste within 15 minutes.
